John Scherr's Phantom Canyon module is his rendition of the well-known location on the Florence and Cripple Creek RR, south of the Cripple Creek mining district in central Colorado. This narrow gauge line, the first to reach the fabulously productive gold mining area, was also vulnerable to flash flooding. In time, two standard gauge railroads made their way into the district and competed with the F&CC. But in 1912 a devastating flood hit in Phantom Canyon, taking out 9 miles of right-of-way and 18 bridges - and that was the end of the F&CC.
